Melanoma is a life-threatening type of skin cancer. Fortunately, it is not common, but treatment is critical to prevent the condition from spreading through the body. What is Melanoma?

Skin cancer develops when the DNA of your skin cells are damaged by the sun. The mutated cells continue to multiply, and this is the genesis of skin cancer. Melanoma is found in the cells that create the color of your skin, known as melanocytes.

How Much Does Melanoma Treatment Cost in Monroe, LA?

Receiving treatment for your melanoma is important for your health, so Hopkins Dermatology works to keep the treatment as affordable as possible. At the time of your appointment with Dr. Hopkins, we can discuss the cost based upon your individualized treatment plan.

What Are the Benefits of Melanoma Treatment?

Melanoma can be life-threatening if it is not treated. The cancer spreads throughout your body, including your internal organs. Melanoma treatment removes the cancerous cells from the skin.

How Do I Know If I Have Melanoma?

Melanoma resembles a mole and may be:

  • Brown, black, purple, flesh-colored, white, bluish, red, or pink
  • Asymmetrical, meaning that each side of the mole is not the same
  • Uneven border around the growth
  • Multi-colored, including different shades of the same color
  • Diameter at least ¼ inch (6mm) or larger
  • Changes over time

What Should I Expect from Melanoma Treatment?

Because melanoma spreads quickly to other areas of the body, treatment involves removing the cancerous tissues. This is typically accomplished by excising the cancer with a clean margin. The margin includes a specific amount of healthy tissue. This ensures that all cancer cells are removed, including those that may not be detectable by visual inspection. The tissue is sent to a lab for evaluation and to verify that the margin is clean. If the melanoma has spread, Dr. Hopkins may refer you to an oncologist for additional treatment.
